The Disney Channel broke cable viewing records with its smash hit "High School Musical 2," which drew an average audience of 17.2 million, according to preliminary Nielsen Media Research ratings.
The record broken was for the largest basic cable audience in history, beating out an ESPN Monday Night Football telecast in 2006. It also broke the record for a film made for basic cable as well, beating out "Crossfire Trail," a western aired on TNT in 2001.
In the age group of 6-11, the second installment of the film drew the largest audience of any TV telecast in Nielsen's modern history, measured from 1991, Disney (DIS) asserted.
Other than the Super Bowl in 2004, it is also drew the largest audience of the 9-14 age group ever. With a huge number of viewing parties during the night, Disney added it was impossible to know how many children really watched the show, above and beyond the countable numbers.
Hannah Montana also benefitted from the show, as 10.7 million tuned in to watch the popular story, which now is also the highest ranking basic cable episode of a series in history says Disney.
I'm sure there will be a High School Musical 3 in the works soon.
