Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have joined screenwriter Nia Vardalos and producer Gary Goetzman in a lawsuit against Gold Circle Films, the company behind the surprise hit "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
The lawsuit was officially brought by businesses controlled by the various plaintiffs, and is asking for an unknown amount of financial damages and a court supervised audit of the film profits.
The film cost about $5 million to make and has reportedly grossed almost $370 million at the worldwide box office. The lawsuit claims Gold Circle has reported gross receipts of only $287 million from the film.
"The accounting statements rendered by defendants have been vague and inadequate in failing to provide information consistent with industry standards," the suit says.
Along with Gold Circle, others named in the suit are Vortex Pictures and Wedding Prods. Gateway co-founder Norm Waitt Jr. is the money behind Gold Circle.
According to Gold Circle executive Scott Niemeyer, "Gold Circle has fully complied with its contractual obligations and has already paid plaintiffs a combined total of over $44 million in profits on 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding.' Gold Circle has never thwarted the producers' audit rights."Niemeyer also claims he invited the producers to perform an audit but they never responded to the offer. He says the contracts also included time limitations which have now passed to perform audits.
