With the beginning of the football season, the overall box office took an expected dive, as the first place finish by "3:10 to Yuma" was only able to bring in $14.1 million. The overall box office for the weekend was the lowest numbers since the end of April this year.
The Lionsgate (LGF) offering had some internal problems as star Russell Crowe and director James Mangold were furious the company moved the film up so closely after Labor Day, knowing it would not perform well.
The other problems was the competition from "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," which they feared would make 3:10 to Yuma pale in comparison if they didn't put it out earlier. Either way it wasn't going to work good for the film.
What may help the film is it will draw a slightly older audience, which usually leads to a longer run. That could help it perform fairly well for several weeks. The production budget was approximately $50 million.
"Halloween" was knocked out of its first place finish which lasted only a week, as it plunged 62 percent, as it was only able to bring in slightly over $10 million.
Third place went to "Superbad" which with its $8 million showing was able to break the $100 million mark. A pleasant surprise for Sony (SNE).
