Although relatively in the background of conservative Christianity, D. James Kennedy had a profound influence on those that were more known to the public. D. James Kennedy died at home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at the age of 76.
Kennedy took a strong stand against what he perceived as a decline in society due to the hostility toward Christianity and the secularization of America.
He consistently spoke out against evolution, homosexual rights and abortion rights, giving a theological framework for those like James C. Dobson and Jerry Falwell.
“For decades, Dr. Kennedy has been a passionate defender of biblical truth in a culture that increasingly forgot it,” Dr. Dobson said in a statement. “He was a giant in the battle to restore traditional values in our nation.”
Kennedy helped to grow the tiny congregation he pastored to about 10,000 members in the Corel Ridge Presbyterian Church.
He also had a radio ministry which had grown to 3.5 million listeners say the group's Web site. It reaches over 145 countries on over 600 stations. He also developed a school, seminary and wrote over 65 books.
Kennedy is survived by his wife, Anne, and daughter, Jennifer Cassidy.
