David Hans Schmidt, who was going to plead guilty for attempting to extort $1 million from Tom Cruise, was found dead in his Phoenix home of an apparent suicide.
Schmidt had stolen pictures in his possession of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes when they were married in Italy. He contacted Cruise to sell them back to him.
Police went to Schmidt's house when a tracker placed on him hadn't moved for a while, and he had not checked in with them. He was discovered at his home by the police with his tracker still on him.
Schmidt, who had been known for doing these type of deals in the past concerning celebrities in compromising videos and photos, was arrested in July for the Cruise incident. Beginning in May, he had contacted representatives of Cruise asking for between $1.2 and $1.3 million.
Other celebrities he's tried to do this with were Paris Hilton and her diaries, along with photos and personal items. He is said to have made deals for the wedding night tape of Tonya Harding, topless photos of rescued U.S. Army POW Pfc. Jessica Lynch, and Bill Clinton's alleged lover Gennifer Flowers.
