When we heard that George Lucas was going to do an animated series spun-off from Star Wars, the last thing to come to mind would be it having a hard time finding a place to air it. Yet that's actually what's happening.
The problem is Lucas is creating a series that isn't for the children channels, neither would it the edgy type of humor show made for adults.
Talking to TV Guide magazine, Lucas said, "People are talking about it, but so far everybody's got the same conundrum: How do we programme it? It doesn't fall into the realm of what animation typically is, which is either adult, kind of off-colour humour or kiddie stuff.
"It has to go on after nine o'clock, and it can't be on a kiddie channel."
I wonder why he didn't think of that before he started the series. Of course Lucas will stretch the limits on everything, but this seems like he didn't quite think things through before starting.
With the show having to air after nine o'clock, it means it wasn't developed for younger children in mind; something I think is a mistake. That already loses a huge portion of the population that would have watched it with their parents. Now the question becomes will teens and adults make up enough people to ensure a strong audience.
Obviously networks are struggling with that question when thinking about making a decision on whether to grab the show or not.
With Lucas' reputation and the Star Wars franchise, something like this shouldn't even have had to been part of the process.
What will probably end up happening, is it will be picked up and get critical acclaim, but smaller audiences. With 40 of the 100 episodes already complete, there probably won't be any changes to adapt to the situation.
In the end, true Star War fans won't care. No matter what happens there will be a loyal fan base to watch the animated series. All that remains to be seen is how many that number will end up being. It looks like it'll be smaller than originally thought.
