The three-day run of "Halloween" has already broken the record for a new release during the U.S. Labor Day weekend holiday, reaching a record breaking $26.5 million with Monday yet to be included in the final figures. The film was projected to finish at about $20 million for the entire four-day weekend.
This obliterates the former record of $16.5 million set by "Transporter 2," which added another $3.5 million to finish at $20 million for the four-day weekend two years ago. The film was directed by rock star Rob Zombie.
In its third time around, "Superbad" dropped to the number 2 position, taking in $12.2 million for the three days. It should reach about $89 million total after the weekend, easily in sight of the $100 million mark.
One newcomer broke into the top three, with "Balls of Fury" taking the third spot, scoring $11.6 million. The show is a parody of martial art films.
