Always setting the goal of $1 more dollar than the year before, Jerry Lewis and his Labor Day Telethon did it again for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, as they not only beat the record, but shattered it by almost $3 million, reaching 63.7 million for the night, eclipsing last years' $61 million.
The telethon, which started in 1966, has raised $1.46 billion over the years to help battle the disease.
Leading the way again was the International Association of Fire Fighters, which were able to gather $25.2 million in donations from their fill-the-boot drives. That also improved over last year, which ended up with $23.5 million.
Lewis has never missed anchoring the telethon over its 42 years, whether he's been sick or not. "We'll be here every year as long as I'm breathing in and out," Lewis said.
