According to an OTX (Online Testing eXchange) study cited by marketingcharts.com, 51 percent of teens find out about new television shows from either TV ads or TV promotions. Other sources of information were through friends or boy/girlfriends (33%), or other kids in school (28).
Lower on the scale were video-sharing sites which 10 percent of teens found out about shows, or blogs, which 7 percent said they got their show information from.
“For all of the hype surrounding blogs and video sharing sites, it’s important for networks and marketers to understand that a majority of teenagers still get information about new programming from TV ads and promos,” said Bruce Friend, president of Media and Entertainment Insights for OTX.
When asked what their choice would be on how they would watch their favorite show, 70 percent of teens said it would be on the scheduled day as well as the scheduled time. Another 21 percent they would record it in some way. A small 7 percent said they would download or stream it online for free. A tiny 3 percent said they were willing to pay for a download
The vast majority of teens also are multitasking when watching TV, with 57 percent saying they are on the Internet at the same time, and 47 percent saying they're either text messaging or emailing while watching TV. Another 43 percent said they were on the phone while the TV was on.
When asked to respond to a question of "what television network totally gets me," Fox (NWS-A) was the only broadcast network in the top five that teens named.
