In what will probably come to be a regular way of doing business, the made-for-the-web series "Nissan Live Sets," has graduated to mainstream TV, as MTV is putting on its high definition channel MHD, says the New York Post.
Yahoo! Music is the producer of the series and has entered a distribution deal with MTV for the original online series.
The series entails a sponsorship deal between Nissan North America and Yahoo!, and includes a set of seven or eight songs in high definition by featured artists like Kelly Clarkson and Christina Aguilera. Yahoo! says the productions have been viewed over 10 million times online.
Launching the second season premiere on September 17 will be Rascal Flatts performing "Me and My Gang," which was the No. 2 album of 2006. Only High School Musical finished ahead of the popular band.
The deal will include airing a new 30-minute episode every month over a nine-month period.
Yahoo! Music is the top-visited online music site. Yahoo! says it has over 23 million unique visitors a month. In contrast, MTV, including its array of music sites, draws 17 million.
To me the most interesting thing about all this is when the online video industry creates a hit that eventually moves to TV and dominates the ratings. It will take a while, but that day is coming.
