At a gathering in Texas of hundreds of Christian filmmakers, they praised the man Walt Disney, but blasted the company they believe has forsaken his legacy and gone far away from it's family-friendly focus.
The Christian Filmmakers Academy, whose purpose is to train those wanting to get into filmmaking and also promotes the making of films with "biblical values," say that they are concerned about the growing influence of Disney (DIS) worldwide as it becomes an "engine for cultural decline."
Founder of the Academy Doug Phillips said, "What we really see is a decline in the ethics and standards of where (Walt) Disney was coming from. We are making the case that there is a departure toward politically correct filmmaking that has a negative effect on family."
For Walt Disney the man, the group and its leaders have nothing but praise, as they get together at the Third Annual Christian Filmmakers Academy to study the way Walt told stories and how he mastered technology to develop stories that valued "monogamy, faithfulness, patriotism and virtue."
Even with the ending of a nine-year boycott of Disney by the Christian communitiy in the U.S., there is still growing concern as Disney attempts to play all sides of the market. This will probably catch up with them, as they'll find it won't work in the long run.
"I have no illusions that the Walt Disney Company is motivated out of love or even deference to Christians in America in their filmmaking decisions," Phillips said. "They follow the dollar and they play different sides against each other."
