Joey Bishop, the last of the "Rat Pack," died at the age of 89 in Newport Beach, California. Other legendary members of the Rat Pack were Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Peter Lawford.
Bishop was born Joseph Abraham Gottlieb, the youngest of five children of Jewish immigrants.
He had been a guest host on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson numerous times, and eventually had his own show called "The Joey Bishop Show."
A second "The Joey Bishop Show" was launched by ABC and lasted for a little over two years, which included one interesting thing that many people remember when the show was cancelled. Bishop, who had Regis Philbin as his announcer and sidekick, performed his opening monologue, and then told people the network and himself had decided to cancel the show, and then he told the audience he was going home to have dinner with his wife, where he then left, leaving Philbin to run the rest of the show.
Along with his appearances at the Sands Hotel with the Rat Pack in Las Vegas, Bishop also was in 14 movies, including the original "Oceans 11" and my personal favorite of Bishops' "Texas Across the River," which he starred in with Dean Martin.
Bishop is survived by his son, Larry, and two grandchildren.
