The speculation is over as to when Radiohead will be releasing their new album, as lead guitarist, Jonny Greenwood announced on the bands' website a download of a 10-track album will be available October 10.
Greenwood said, "Hello, everyone. Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days."
Radiohead dropped EMI two years ago, and have been without a label ever since. It looks like they're going to challenge the existing music model which has been dying a slow death.
They're releasing a 10-track LP, In Rainbows, on October 10, available on their website only. Fans will be able to purchase it at whatever price they decide.
The band will also release a Discbox, described this way:
"Along with the new album, Radiohead will also be releasing a Discbox, which includes the new album In Rainbows, which will be on a double vinyl record and CD. There will also be included a 2nd CD which will include other new songs. Along with the tracks, the band will include digital artwork, photos and lyrics, which will be showcased in a hardback book and slipcase. The special edition will sell for about $80, depending on what the currency rates are at the time. It'll be available on or around December 3."
Prince did the same thing in the summer, and it worked great for him before his 21-city tour in the UK, which ended up being completely sold out in each city.
Some lesser known bands have tried this, but Radiohead's stature could bring it to the forefront if they succeed, and make it a viable option for those bands struggling to make a living, or a means to get noticed by the labels, if they want to go that way.
This has to make the labels even more nervous. If Radiohead and other continue to work on this model, and it works for them, the labels could increasingly become irrelevant to many of the artists.
As revenues continue to decline, artists will continue to look for new ways to monetize their material, as the music industry seems unable to migrate to new models that work good for the artists.
