In a written statement, Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts, announced he's taking an "indefinite leave of absense," after a lawsuit that has caused extraordinary scrutiny from allegations raised.
Roberts said in a statement: "Today, I have asked the Board of Regents of Oral Roberts University to grant me a temporary leave of absence until such time as these matters can be resolved. I have prayed about it, and feel that it is in the best interest of my family and the University."
Stepping into the void will be Billy Joe Daugherty, who will lead the university as "executive regent" until the lawsuit has taken its course.
If the accusations are found to be untrue, the chairman of ORU's board of regents, George Pearsons, said they would want Roberts to return.
Roberts added that the "untrue allegations of sexual misconduct by my wife" have been the most damaging to his family.
Roberts also claims the plaintiffs have said "We don't know if any of these allegations are true, but they are so defaming that the Roberts won't survive." If that's true, and the allegations are proven false, these people will be in a lot of legal trouble.
The lawsuit was filed by three former ORU professors who had been fired.
