Almost everything Tyler Perry has touched turns to gold in the film industry. The exception was his last time out, where "Daddy's Little Girls" only opened to $11.2 million.
This time around he picked up where he ususally does, by bringing in a solid $21.5 million at 2,011 venues with Why Did I Get Married. That was an average of $10,691, overwhelmingly the competition by far.
A little known fact about Tyler Perry is his productions have brought the best return-on-investment in recent years, as mentioned here:
"To give you an example of how far ahead Perry is of everybody else, he has a return, measured from 2004 till today of 120% ROI. The next closest actors to him are Tom Cruise and Will Smith, who came in second with a 53% ROI. Tom Hanks was next with 43% ROI."
The second-place movie for the weekend was family-friendly The Game Plan, starring The Rock. It brough in another $11.5 million, a small drop of 11 percent. This is a typical performance of a film catering to families; they tend to have longer legs.
Michael Clayton was rejected by audiences, only able to come in third in its opener, a disaster for the film, which insiders are trying to tout as an Oscar contender. It brought in a tiny $11.01.
All this underscores again how far critics and the general audiences are apart. Michael Clayton was treated great by the critics, while Why Did I Get Married was pretty much trashed. The people spoke and let it be known which one they wanted to watch.
Another example this weekend was the highly marketed Elizabeth: The Golden Age, which was only able to bring in a puny $6.183 million.
