With the release of "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" coming on December 21, just a few days before Christmas, the Walt Disney Co. (DIS) is launching a big marketing campaign to make sure customers are in the right holiday mood to go see the film.
Labeling their effort The World's Biggest Treasure Hunt," people can go to Disney.com/NationalTreasure, which is the location for participating in the treasure hunt game, as well as the official website for the film.
Visitors to the website will be able to interact with and play a variety of games over a 10-week period, while also getting a peek at the film content. Some winners will even get real treasure from the Odyssey Marine Exploration. A nice touch considering the genre.
"The 'NATIONAL TREASURE' franchise is beloved by audiences worldwide, and lends itself to this type of global, grand-scale adventure. What we're creating is unprecedented -- a chance for everyone to experience first hand the adventures and the puzzles that make this franchise so unique. Plus, players will have chances to win one-of-a-kind, never before available prizes of tremendous value," said Jim Gallagher, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Marketing.
The film itself will feature the story of pages that are missing from the diary of the infamous John Wilkes Booth, who murdered Abraham Lincoln, being discovered; as a result, Ben Gates' (played by Nicolas Cage) great-great grandfather is implicated as a conspirator in Lincoln's death.
The ensuing journey by Gates to prove his great-great grandfather's innocence, takes him around the globe and some extraordinary, hidden secrets.
Joining Cage, will be original cast members Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel. Newcomers will be Ed Harris, Helen Mirren, Bruce Greenwood, Christian Camargo and Joel Gretsch.
Producers are Jon Turteltaub and Jerry Bruckheimer, while Turteltaub is directing. Scripting the project are The Wibberleys, Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio.
