It only took about three years, but the two sides almost got it done, as the ABC (DIS) network and Writers Guild of America East reached a tentative agreement for a new contract. The contract is subject being ratified by ABC News employees sometime in December. The former contract expired early in 2005.
Assuming the new contract is ratified, it will run through 2010.
The terms of the deal, which covers approximately 250 news workers in Washington and New York, would include a yearly raise of 3.5 percent for the duration of the contract. There will also be a settlement of an existing dispute before the National Labor Relations Board which will give workers a one-off bonus of $3,700 each. Workers must be full-time employees to receive the bonus.
This will cut off the potential for a strike, which had been authorized to be instituted by union members if a deal couldn't be made.
