While th $28.1 million take for Beowulf brought it a No. 1 spot in this weekend's soft box office, it's hard to know if that's good news or not. The costs of the film came in at $150 million, which may be hard to recoup. With the huge marketing push it received, this has to be a disappointment for Paramount (VIA-B).
The potential good news, is another CGI action film, "300," was able to bring another $70 million in after they opened in March. So there's some hope for this film as well.
Jerry Seinfeld's "Bee Movie" held for the second spot again this weekend, bringing in a fair $14.3 million; a much bigger drop of 44 percent than expected. Usually family films hold much better over a period of time.
"Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" and "Fred Claus" may have contributed to a little of the drop, but even so, the two together only brought in around $22 million.
Third place finisher "American Gangster" also plunged more than expected, taking in only $13.2 million in its third frame. That was a drop of 45 percent from last weekend, although they did reach the $100 million mark overall.
To show how weak this years' seasonal box office is, it dropped 29 percent for the top 12 movies this weekend, making it the second straight weekend where the 12 combined didn't reach $100 million total.
With not a lot to get excited about next weekend, this could be one of the worst Novembers in years. It's been six years (2001) since a November weekend didn't reach $100 million, and doing it two times in a row isn't a good sign for the industry.
Next weekends' new entries will be Hitman, Enchanted and Mist.
