Comedian Bernie Mac has been recruited by Fox (NWS-A) to star in a comedy produced by Warner Bros. TV.
The series tentatively named "Starting Under" will have Mac playing the role of a divorced dad who ends up staying with his son who is extremely shy, but eventually starts to work for him as well. Mac will play his usual role as an outgoing, outspoken character.
Scripting the show is Bruce Helford who also developed The Drew Carey Show. He will produce the show with his business partner Deb Oppenheimer. Directing and executive producing the project will be Andy Ackerman, while Bernie Mac will also receive a producer's credit.
Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said about picking up the comedy: "It's a 'Cheers'-like, well-contructed, 'Frasier'-esque comedy. Bruce came up with a brilliant idea that balances Bernie's unique point of view with a new twist, surrounding him with great supporting characters."
Mac has starred and worked for Fox before with his "The Bernie Mac Show."
