It seems J.K. Rowling was named entertainer of the year by Entertainment Weekly for the unique contribution she made: not simply for the obvious Harry Potter series, but that she was able to do it with an old technology - books, while everything around her was being consumed through television, videogames and the Internet.
Even more importantly, in the estimation of Entertainment Weekly, it was the timelessness of the overall work that makes her the Entertainer of the Year for them. They believe that years from now new readers will be able to pick up her books and be just as enthralled by them and relevant as they are today.
It is estimated that the Harry Potter franchise has generated $15 billion in revenue; across all platforms. There have been almost 400 million of the Potter books sold globally; and so far the total take worldwide for the first five films in the series has been $4.49 billion. It's now the No. 1 franchise in movie history.
