
The Sirius-4 telecommunications satellite was put into orbit on Sunday, and will orbit at 35,786 kilometers in altitude. It was set into orbit by a Briz-M Russian booster.
The satellite itself was built by Lockheed Martin (LMT) Commercial Space Systems, and will serve a number of roles in its usage. The expected service life of the satellite is a minimum of 15 years, and weighs in at 4,385 kilograms. It is based on Lockheed Martin's A2100AX platform.
It is part of the Sirius system of 40 telecommunications satellites, and is the largest of them all.
The system is used by both private and government organizations, and is mostly used by companies for one time broadcasts of special reports, news and sporting events.
The system is run by SES Sirius AB of Sweden, while providing Internet, radio and television services across Europe, Africa and Scandinavia.
