
The Peter Jackson produced sci-fi film "District 9" has had distribution and English-language rights acquired by Sony Pictures Entertainment, according to an announcement by Peter Schlessel, President of Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, and QED International CEO Bill Block.
Jackson is producing the film via his WingNut Films label. The film is being completely financed through Los Angeles based QED International.
Scripting the film were Terri Tatchell, who co-wrote it with Neill Blomkamp, who is also making his big screen directing debut with the film.
Executive producing the film will be Bill Block and Ken Kamins, a Jackson manager of Key Creatives.
Block said concerning Sony's partnership with them: "Amy Pascal, Michael Lynton and Jeff Blake and the entire team at Sony really understand this film and we couldn't be more excited to be in business with them. They are completely committed to the unique vision Neill and Peter have for 'District 9.'
The plot of the film is being kept under tight secrecy in the pre-production stage of the project.
Shooting for the film is scheduled for Spring of 2008 in South Africa.
