The notoriously slow weekend after Thanksgiving followed in its predecessors' footsteps, as it performed as expected with a very slow weekend box office take.
Leading for the second week in a row is Disney's (DIS) "Enchanted," earning another $17 million, a drop of 51 percent from its opening frame.
Bringing up second place was "This Christmas" from Screen Gems. It was a somewhat surprise to have it finish second with its small venue of 1,858 screens. With the company only spending $13 million for production, it's already made money, and should continue performing decently during its holiday run. It's now brought in almost $37 million over its first two weekends. I like how Screen Gems is operating like a business with its films.
The expensive Beowulf dropped to $7.9 million, a 52 percent plunge, although the slow weekend allowed it to finish in third place. Domestically it's only been able to muster up $68.6 million on a $150 million budget. International sales should help them make some money though, as sales overseas has reached $50 million so far. It still has to be somewhat of a disappointment for Paramount (VIA-B).
For the last part of the year, the box office has been disappointing to say the least, as the top 12 movies again underperformed in comparison to last year. This weekend was no different as the top 12 films brought in $76.6 million, while last year the top twelve earned $81.2 million.
