While he changed his name to Brian Sean Griffith, it didn't change Shawn Eric Eckardt's past history as one of the participants in the plan to injure skating rival of Tonya Harding, Nancy Kerrigan.
Eckardt eventually received a prison term of 18 months, but served only 14, being released four months early for his part in the planned attack.
Eckardt, along with Harding's former husband Jeff Gillooly, Derrick Smith and Shane Stant were all charged with crimes in connection with the attack. Stant was the one who actually attacked Kerrigan.
In the attack, Stant had a club which he hit Kerrigan in the knee, driving out of the competition.
Eckardt and Gillooly were the two that developed the plan, while Derrick Smith, Stant's uncle, drove the getaway car.
In 1991, Eckardt also received three years probation for a misdemeanor assault.
While Harding has always maintained her innocence in knowing about the plan, she did plead guilty to conspiracy to hinder an investigation. Eventually she was banned from competing in U.S. Figure Skating Association competitions.
Eckardt was 40-years-old at the time of his death.
