In an extraordinary show of calm and determination, Jeanne Assam, a volunteer security guard at New Life Church in Colorada Springs, gunned down an assailant on a shooting rampage, after he killed two sisters in the parking lot as they were attempting to get in their van, and also injured their father at the same time.
Assam, who is a former Minneapolis police officer, saw the Mathew Murray, 24, enter the church building, and ducked down until he got closer. At that time she got up and commanded him to surrender. When he didn't she started walking toward him, shooting as she did, killing the gunman.
"I saw him coming through the doors and I took cover. And I waited for him to get closer and came out of cover and identified myself and engaged him and took him down," she said.
If Assam hadn't taken the action she did, it's thought that up to 50 to 100 people may have been killed. Reportedly Murray had over 1,000 rounds of ammunition with him, while being in full body armor.
Murray was also officially tied to the killing of the two young people in the Denver suburb of Arvada, where he also injured two others before leaving, after being refused a place to stay. It was at a local Youth With a Mission center.
For her part, Assam concluded, after giving credit to God throughout a press conference, "I just knew what I had to do. It was me, the gunman and God."
An amazing story of courage and taking responsibility for her job, in the face of life and death circumstances.
