
The prolific character actor Allan Melvin died today at the age of 84.
Allan Melvin is one of those actors that almost everybody has seen, but nobody knows his name. His first break came when he signed on to "The Phil Silvers Show" as Cpl. Henshaw, he was the sidekick to Silvers' character Ernie Bilko.
Other notable roles he played were as Sam the Butcher in "The Brady Bunch," and who was also the man that the family housekeeper Alice dated. He was also a regular on "All in the Family," where he played Archie Bunker's neighbor Barney.
He appeared on a lot of other shows including the Andy Griffith Show, Kung Fu, and Gomer Pyle.
Melvin was also the voice of numerous cartoon characters in popular series like The Smurfs, Spider-Man, Magilla Gorilla, The Fintstones and Ducktales.
Citing his wife Amalia, the Los Angeles Times said he died of cancer
