
With a lot of attention on the possibilities for advertising on handheld devices, the big media companies have been focusing on advertising "out-of-home," and with the mobility of people in mind, but not in connection with cell phones.
Rather, many companies are looking at ways they can reach the places people travel in, or end up at, when growing their ad strategies.
NBC Universal (GE) is extending beyond the living room, while bypassing the unrealized potential of cell phones, to work with today's realities. That reality is to reach people while they're on the go, and also where they go to. To that end they're offering advertising in transportation like taxis and trains, while also targeting their destinations: schools, hospitals, stadiums and gas stations ... among others.
What's interesting, but obvious about this, is the creation of short content - similar in length to the Internet - to put on these various screens in diverse locations.
It may surprise some people that out-of-home advertising is second only to the Internet in growth.
NBC Universal has positioned themselves well in this high-potential advertising space.
