Not long after the announcement of the nominations for the Academy Awards, British betting website Ladbrokes offered its odds on some of the favorite categories. You can see the full list of nominees on my recent post.
The favorite to win the Best Picture award is "No Country for Old Men," said the webite, with 8-11 odds in their favor.
For the best actor award, Daniel Day-Lewis is far ahead of the rest, with huge 1-8 odds, making him not a really good person to place your bet on, as he's being considered a shoo-in by the betting site. His closest contender for the award is Johnny Depp, coming in at 7-1 odds. Following were George Clooney, 12-1; Viggo Mortensen, 16-1, and Tommy Lee Jones, 20-1.
Julie Christy was the strong favorite in the Best Actress category, as she had a solid lead with odds coming in at 2-5. Cate Blanchett and Laura Linney, who were surprises by many to be in the Best Actress race, were the least likely to win the award according to Ladbrokes, although I could never count Cate Blanchett out of anything concerning awards. Neither would I with Laura Linney. Blanchett was only given 16-1 odds, while Linney got 25-1. Marion Cotillard was second with 3-1 odds and Ellen Page third with 6-1.
Regardless of the oddsmaking fun, this year is truly one of the more unknown for awards in some time, as far as easily picking winners. Even in the past when there has been more surety, there are always surprises. This year promises to be even more so.
That should draw a lot of interest to the final picks and the ceremonies.
The Awards are set to air on February 24 from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
