It wasn't a great weekend at the box office, but it brought a fair amount of business to the studios and theaters, led by "Bucket List" with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.
The drama of two terminally ill cancer patients leaving the hospital to enjoy the last days of their lives brought in $19.5 million. With this being a decent opener, it makes you wonder how much it would have done if it had been opened on Christmas Day by Warner Bros (TWX). It opened at 2,911 venues and averaged about $6,750 each.
Finishing second was "First Sunday" with Ice Cube, who always seems to be able to get that $10 million for his openers, doing it again by getting a $19 million take. This makes it nine films in a row that Ice Cube has opened to over $10 million. It's average of around $8,500 was the leader this weekend, opening at 2,213 venues.
With the love of the media for Juno, it's helped it keep on going strong, as it brought in $14 million for Fox (NWS), only a 12 percent drop from the last frame. This will bring the film to about $71.2 million, and during the week it will become the best earning film for Fox Searchlight it's ever had.
Overall the performance for the weekend is a little better than it was last year, although still behind overall. Next weekend's release of "27 Dresses" and "Cloverfield" may help that change.
