If an e-mail conversation between Peter Jackson and Elijah Wood was correctly understood, it gives us a potential confirmation of rumors floating around that the two films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" will include the second film being a bridge between The Hobbit and the first book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Talking to MTV News Wood said, "I haven't spoken to him directly about it, [but] I've e-mailed him, and as far as I know, the two films that they're doing, one will be The Hobbit and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings."
If that were to happen, even though there isn't much in the actual stories of Tolkien to work from, it would almost guarantee that some of the former players in the series would return for this one; something fans should love, even it much of it is a fiction of the books.
Those of us true LOTR fans know that there were possibly just enough in the books to build a story around the intervening years; things like some of the journeys mentioned that Frodo had with Bilbo. If this is the way it truly goes, Wood would enjoy a major place in the second film, and creative license would be given for including any one of the original characters as well.
While Wood is excited about the possibility of returning to the world of the Hobbits and LOTR, saying if "it makes sense" he'd love to do it. He added as a fan "I think people want it to exist in the same world. So at least now we are assured that it will be done through that same lens, which is great. It's exciting."
He's referring to using the same actors from the original roles in his above comment. I think all of us fans would agree with him there.
It seems like The Hobbit watch has already begun, and we'll see it build and build until the release of the film. I wouldn't have it any other way.
