Mediaset SpA from Italy gave Rupert Murdoch's Sky Italia a black eye, as they won the rights to Time Warner (TWX) and Universal (UVV) television and movie content in Italy, according Pier Silvio Berlusconi, son of the former prime minister and billionaire Silvio Berlusconi.
Silvio owns Mediaset SpA, the largest private broadcaster in Italy.
Murdoch's Sky Italia used to own the rights to Time Warner and Universal content in the country.
The deal made between the entities will extend for four years. Although it's not known how much money was involved with the deal, industry estimates are at between $500 - $600 million.
Mediaset will have the content up this weekend, starting with its Premium Gallery, their new pay-per-view channel, and is negotiating with Telecom Italia, Tiscali, Sky Italia and Fastweb to broadcast the content across their networks. That's got to be a little galling to Murdoch and News Corp. (NWS-A).
