The publicist for Kate Winslet said she is close to a deal to replace Nicole Kidman in her role "The Reader." Winslet was actually originally asked to play the role, but had to decline because of conflicts in her schedule.
Based on a novel by German author Bernhard Schlink, the role is about a woman who goes on trial concerning war crimes connected to the holocaust. It's setting is in post-war Germany. The book was also one of the picks for Oprah Winfrey and her book club.
All this happened in response to Nicole Kidman announcing she and husband, country singer Keith Urban, are expecting their first baby. At that time she also said as a result she would be dropping her role in The Reader.
The film is being directed by Stephen Daldry.
