The Monte Carlo hotel-casino caught fire and guests fled the blaze, with some in tears, as hotel employees worked to get them to safety.
At about 11 a.m. Vegas time, the smoke on the roof of the Monte Carlo was spotted and reported, as the fire spead across the roof. Some guests reported blazing debris falling to the streets, and the fire eating away at the casino's sign. The building is 32 stories high, and the top four floors had smoke and fire pouring out of the windows.
Clark County Fire Chief Steve Smith said so far there are no reports of major injuries, and the fire seems to be under control
"As we go out of the danger zone, we'll methodically check each floor," he said. "No rooms are burning."
The latest report from Casino city Times says this:
* No major injuries reported at this time. The fire on the west wing is contained. The south wing is nearly contained.
* The fire is focused on the exterior.
* The building is nearly evacuated. Floors 15 and above have been evacuated entirely.
* On floors 15 and below, personnel are combing the floors to ensure everyone is out and obtain an accounting.
* Additionally, there were welders on the roof. The cause of the fire is not yet officially determined.
Currently the blaze is being called a "three alarm" fire, and everone's being evacuated.
Emergency fire and medical crews are ready to intervene and respond by landing on the roof if need be.
Ignorant new helicopters are causing problems by creating a downdraft of the fire, and the police are reportedly attempting to get them to pull back.
