The "spoof" genre seems to have gathered a core audience, as just about every time one has been released over the last couple years, they seem to perform far better than expected.
It's no different this time around, as the latest spoof, "Meet The Spartans," pulled it off again, as it finished in first place for the box office weekend with a decent $18.7 million finish.
In what seems to confirm their is a loyal audience following to this type of movie, last year during the same weekend, "Epic Movie" opened to almost the exact same numbers, generating $18.6 million in its first showing.
The second place film for the weekend was the latest installment of the Rambo franchise, starring Sylvester Stallone. After 20 years, I was wondering if many had forgotten it. I guess after the reemergence of Rocky last year, this also had to happen.
What's interesting, is 20 years ago when Rocky III opened, its numbers were also similar to this Rocky, drawing just shy of $17 million in its opening weekend.
Bringing up the third place position this weak was "27 Dresses" with Katherine Heigl, which managed to end the weekend with $13.6 million in receipts. With a budget of about $30 million, this is going to be a pleasant surprise for Fox, as it will finish higher in revenue than expected, possibly even reaching the $75 million mark, and maybe even much higher.
The "Cloverfield" anomaly is already over, as it plunged by a whopping 68 percent, dropping it to fourth place. Although some are acting surprised by this, they shouldn't be. Many of those commenting on it either hated it or loved it, there wasn't much middle ground.
Couple that with the usual drop of horror films, and those that don't like to pay money to get nauseous from motion sickness, and this was something I expected to happen. Of course it doesn't matter too much to Paramount, as they've already paid their bills with this, and everything from now on is profit.
