The Charlatans are taking up where Radiohead left off, by offering their latest album "You Cross My Path" for free online. Radiohead successfully offered their album as a free download and it generated more than 122,000 in physical albums afterward.
It wasn't clear on "The Charlatan" website whether they were asking for any price someone wanted to pay for the album, or if if free was the only way to get it.
Either way, it will be released on March 3, 2008 on the bands' website, and also the Xfm website. Similar to Radiohead, after that they'll release a physical version of the album in CD and vinyl form on May 19th. It'll be distributed across 33 countries by Cooking Vinyl.
The vinyl 45's will be offered as a limited edition, while the CDs will be sold as a deluxe edition.
To generate more interest, the band will release a single for free download on February 25th, called "Oh! Vanity" before the album release.
