Sony Again Presents Organic LED TVs at Consumer Electronics Show

OLED TV

Sony Corp. (SNE) again offered up their OLED TV at the Consumer Electronics Show to remind consumers they are an innovative and cutting edge company. They also revealed their robotic music player at the show.

First, their OLED TV, or Organic Light Emitting Diodes TV, is looked at as the future competitor that may eventually replace the LCD or plasma TVs. Sony has a lot of them showcased at last years show also.

What is holding them back at this time from being introducted into the market is the inability to make them large enough to compete with plasma and LCD TVs. Another is the lifespan issues, which aren't up to those of their potential competitors yet.

The strength included with the OLED TVs are the extremely thin panel they have, and its contrast ratio, which has been reputed to be about one-million-to-one. The color of images is also extraordinary when contrasted with their rivals. The display is measured at 3mm to 9mm.

Another challenge is existing patents on the technology make it likely they will have to pay out licensing fees, which could put pressure on their margins and profits. Kodak holds a number of patents on the technology.

Not to be outdone, Pioneer revealed a new plasma TV model which had the crowd gasping, as it included a 50-inch-wide TV named Project Kuro. It came in a only 9mm thick. Similar to existing OLED's, this is a prototype.

Again, this is a preliminary response to the eventual release of OLED displays and their high quality images.

Robot Music Player

Concerning the robotic music player of Sony, it's scheduled to be released in the U.S. sometime this spring, and has all sorts of interesting abilities it can perform, that makes it an emotional favorite.

It dances and moves around to the music and can be programmed by the user to the choreography you want.
