The UK box office did this year what the American box office did: break the summer box office record.
Nielsen EDI data says the overall summer box office finished with £904 million, an increase of eight percent over 2006.
Unsurprisingly, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix led the UK in ticket sales, ending with a total of almost £50 million.
Also popular with the Brits was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which was the second-most watched film, and Shrek the Third, which was the third most popular.
Some of this was attributed to the extremely wet summer, as noted by Nielsen Entertainment's Nick King, who said, "The wet summer weather helped to boost ticket sales, along with the absence of major sporting events competing for the audience's attention, such as the football World Cup or Olympic Games."
This year will also have some big pictures coming out, which makes me wonder if the Olympics will cut into the number of people going to the theatre.
Anticipated films this year will be Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Bond 22; all of which should be big hits.
