Saying she is a fan of the writings of Cormac McCarthy, specifically this work, Charlize Theron has taken on a minor role in the upcoming film "The Road," based on McCarthy's apocalyptic novel.
Mortensen plays the lead, as a father trying to travel across America while attempting to protect his sons from mutants from a nuclear fall-out who are cannibals. The film will focus primarily on the relationship between the father and son and their difficult journey.
Theron will play his wife, who is presented in flashbacks to Mortensen's character in the movie.
Cormac McCarthy is swiftly gaining a growing reputation in Hollywood, and is being aggressively pursued to get his works on the big screen. "No Country For Old Men" was based on one of his novels, as well as Blood Meridian, which is being worked on by Ridley Scott to put in the theaters.
Helming "The Road" is John Hillcoat (The Proposition). Shooting is expected to start in February, with the film being scheduled for release late in 2008.
