"WARN" notices, mandated by the federal government, have been sent out be Warner Bros. (TWX), which could be the precursor to up to 1,000 workers for the company being laid off.
A Warner spokeswoman said that under the U.S. Department of Labor's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications regulations, the company is required to send these types of notices in certain situations - specifically in relationship to strikes.
"These WARN notices were sent because, in certain circumstances, federal and California law can require employers to give notice of staffing changes," Warners spokeswoman Stacey Hoppe said. "Due to the ongoing WGA work stoppage, some studio divisions will have to lay off employees. We regret the impact this will have on our employees, and we hope to bring them back to work once the WGA strike ends."
What this means for workers, is anytime after Friday they could be laid off. Of course this is just a procedural thing, everyone connected to the studios has known this could eventually happen.
This is important for Warner workers because the notices were sent out on November 12, which told them in about 60 days they could be subject to being laid off. That 60-day period is about up.
Other steps which have already been taken by the studios has been the elimination of most overtime and leaner budgets. Once they are cut to the bone, the only other choices are layoffs
