The success of "Fool's Gold" in landing the first place spot for the weekend box office has to be owed entirely to the marketing campaign and trailers offered up by Warner Bros. in promoting the movie. The vast majority of those that had previewed it basically thought it stunk.
No matter, they took the No. 1 spot by drawing an estimated $22 million into the cash registers. Other than the exceptions of Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds and Cloverfield, the $22 million generated lines up with the performance of other top weekend winners so far this year, which have been averaging between $18 to $22 million an opening.
The comedy "Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins" came in the No. 2 spot this weekend, as the character played by Martin Lawrence, who is a celebrity and rich, isn't able to impress his home town people when he returns to celebrate his parents 50th anniversary.
It seems people wanted to take a look at the Roscoe being humbled and put in his place during the visit home. They enjoyed it to the tune of $17.1 million. This might help Martin Lawrence get back in the game some, as his perforance in the 2000s hasn't been close to what it had been the decade before.
The third place finisher is a surprise simply because it was no longer supposed to be in theaters. But the success of "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" last week forced Disney to keep this one going. Originally it was supposed have a limited 7-day run.
There was of course no way they could keep the average they had last week, but even so, they were able to end at $10.5 million, a venue average of $15,295. It only showed at 617 theaters. This brings their 10-day total to $53.4 million.
The one movie that continues to shock and surprise everyone is Juno, which ended at the No. 5 spot in its 10th weekend, only dropping 18 percent from last week. It has now reached an amazing $117.6 million in overall sales. It's a strong performance for an indie film, and it isn't done yet either. It took in $5.7 million for the weekend.
