Taking into account the fact that the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus movie was only offered in 683 movie theaters, the $29 million it made to lead the box office weekend was phenomenal.
The wholesome film, which was created for a miniscule $7 million, made over four times that amount in its opener. The average per venue was a monster $42,460. This will continue on as it goes along too.
Only theaters with digital accomodations were able to offer the films, and I'm sure those that made the expensive change are smiling today. There had been opposition from theater owners of the digital switch because of the costs involved. Now they know why it needs to be made.
Limited venues will create the scarcity factor which will keep the film selling out. This was a smart marketing campaign and strategy by Disney (NYSE:DIS).
After that performance, it's hard to get too excited about the horror film from Lionsgate called "The Eye," which stars Jessica Alba. It premiered to a fair $13 million, and will promptly plunge into obscurity, like all average horror offerings. It was good enough to be the second place movie at the box office. Not bad for Super Bowl Sunday.
In its third time around, 27 Dresses finished third, generating $8.4 million. While the drop was 37 percent, not bad, but probably more than Fox thought it would decline, still isn't a disaster, as the cost of the film was $30 million, and it has already passed the $57 million mark.
Comparing it to the same period last year, this weekend was a success, all due to the popularity of the Hannah Montana franchise. If not for that, it would have been about the same, or a little less than last years' top ten.
Cloverfield continues its expected plunge, as the experimental nature of it no longer interests moviegoers. Good thing it had the huge opener it did. It finished in 9th place, ending with $4.9 million.
