"Law & Order" Saying Goodbye to Jesse L. Martin

Jesse L. Martin who has played the role of Detective Ed Green in "Law & Order" will be leaving the show after nine years.

When Martin said he had signed on for 13 episodes this year, conjecture was he was going to be leaving, which is now confirmed, although he did have an option to do more shows if he had wanted to go that route.

Word is he'll be filming one more episode of the show, then he'll then be written out of the drama.

Replacing Martin will be Anthony Anderson, who had a role in the Law & Order: SVU in the past. Anderson will be a new character who partners with Cyrus Lupo, played by Jeremy Sisto.

Martin joined the cast of Dick Wolf's mothership in 1999 and spent five seasons hunting down bad guys with Jerry Orbach's Lennie Briscoe before having to readjust to Dennis Farina's Joe Fontana, Milena Govich's Nina Cassidy and, this year, Sisto's Cyrus Lupo.

JESSE L. MARTIN LEAVING 'LAW & ORDER'

"Martin's departure is described as amicable. He's slated to play the late Marvin Gaye in the big-screen movie "Sexual Healing" and has several other movies in post-production."

Jesse L. Martin gone from 'Law & Order'

Although Fox has never officially pulled the plug on K-Ville, Anderson's casting in Law & Order pretty much makes that a done deal. Martin recently finished work on the feature Peter and Vandy, and will next play Marvin Gaye in the indie biopic Sexual Healing, which also stars James Gandolfini.

No more 'Order' for Martin

"Law & Order" continues Anderson's streak of dramatic roles that includes FX's "The Shield," the Oscar-winning "The Departed" and, most recently, on Fox's gritty cop drama "K-Ville," for which he landed an Image Award.

Jesse L. Martin Dropping out of Law and Order

He will be written off the show, but there's no word yet on exactly what that means (quitting the force, getting killed off, abducted by aliens, whatever).

Martin's departure comes in a season heavy with cast turnover, even on a show famous for its rotating door for actors. Jeremy Sisto joined the show at the start of the season, playing Green's partner Cyrus Lupo, and Linus Roache came on board as Deputy District Attorney Michael Cutter, with Sam Waterston's Jack McCoy moving up to the D.A. post.
