The network executives of the USA Network are finding themselves deluged with sunflower seeds, as a company whose offices are based in Minnesota has been chosen to be the source of the cruchy snack item.
One of the key organizers of the sunflower seed protest, June Terrell, said she made the decision to use Giants Seeds, after doing an online search. A major deciding factor was that one of the key characters in the film, played by Minnesota native Joel Gretsch, along with the company, had a connection through the state. Terrell said she felt the coincidence was a good luck charm.
The strategy being used for The 4400 is similar to the one used by the fans of "Jericho," whose protest weapon of choice was bags of peanuts, which they sent in droves (50,000 lbs.) to CBS (NYSE:CBS-A) until they relented and reinstated the show. In this case executives from USA Networks will be the recipients of lots of sunflower seeds. ![]()
Many of the fans are doing this not solely for the purpose of getting the show back on USA, but at minimum so the network will bring an ending to the show in order to see where the compelling story ends up leading to.
Tom Schuler, who handles Internet sales for Giants Seeds, said "It's kind of cool to see all these loyal fans. It's a little crazy, but I feel good about it." Before the campaign has officially started, he said there's already been 1,700 sunflower seed bags ordered.
