The weekend box office didn't perform too well, as the top ten films were only able to bring in $85,241,000, further dropping it from the numbers it produced through last year at this time.
"Vantage Point" led the way this weekend with a decent $24 million, being shown at 3,149 venues, to make it the widest new release by far. It averaged $7,621 per venue during the weekend. No other new film was released at even 1,500 venues.
It's a good thing they released the film this widely, as the opening of this disjointed film will help them recover their $40 million budget, which will plunge in numbers big time next week.
The second place finisher this week, "Jumper," performed similar to how "Vantage Point" will, plunging by 54 percent over last weekends' opener of $27.4 million. The strong opening will also help them carry their budget of $85 million. So far the film has earned $56.2 million, and should finish domestically somewhere around what the film was budgeted for.
Dropping from second last week to third this week is "The Spiderwick Chronicles," which was only able to garner $12.6 million in its second frame. Although the drop of 34 percent wasn't too bad, and shows it'll probably hold decently over the next couple weeks. It needs to, as it cost about $100 million to produce. It hasn't caught on like it hoped to with its targeted demographic.
Amazingly, "Juno" continues to hold strongly in its 12th weekend, as it only dropped 11.1 percent this weekend, bringing in another $4.1 million. The overall total is an astounding $130.4 million for the idie film. If it does good at the Oscars tonight, it could add more legs under it, and cause another surge.
The only other offering in the top ten which was new, was "Be Kind, Rewind," which for some reason opened at only a miniscule 808 venues. With an average of $5,074 per venue, you can't help wondering how much over the $4.1 million they received they would have gotten if they had a stronger release.
Word-of-mouth could help this one hold fairly strong, and even surge ahead. That assumes they increase the number of theaters it's released at as well next frame.
