In an unfortunate turn of events for singer/songwriter Lennon Murphy, Yoko Ono has filed a lawsuit against her for using her name "Lennon" for her band.
It's too bad because about 8 years ago in 2000, Murphy said she communicated with Ono and her attorney for the sole purpose of taking care of the potential conflict arising from her given name and John Lennon's name. Ono reportedly gave her ok on the situation, and everything seemed all right.
Just two days before the statute of limitations was ready to run out, Ono evidently changed her mind and ended up filing the lawsuit.
The lawsuit was filed with the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board within the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. It's pursuing the cancellation of the trademark Murphy has with the name "Lennon" for the name of the band.
Murphy vented her frustration on her Web site saying, "I'm not sure what confusion I could be causing since I don't have the $50,000 to hire a lawyer and fight this. If people were confusing me with John Lennon and accidently buying my records I should have more than enough money to live my life and hire a lawyer? I wish that was the case."
According to lawyers for Ono, Murphy registered the trademark "fraudulently." They also mentioned using her name in this manner is a threat to the "distinctive artistic brilliance that has come to be associated with the Lennon name, likeness, image and trademarks of inestimable value to his successor."
Julian Lennon, the son of John Lennon from his first wife Cynthia Lennon, had this to say, "This is NOT about me but about a girl named 'Lennon.' She has my full support."
Julian has had his share of battles with Yoko as well.
To me it is a real stretch to say there's some type of underhanded dealings by Murphy in this situation, and that she poses a threat in any way to the John Lennon legacy or estate.
