Ian McKellen responded to a fans question on whether he would want to play the role of Gandalf the Wizard again when the prequel to the series, "The Hobbit" starts production.
He said on his blog that he definitely would.
"Yes, I will, if Peter Jackson and I have anything to do with it, he being the producer and me being, on the whole, a very lucky actor."
In another question concerning a role in the Hobbit, a fan asked if Peter Jackson had approached him yet. He responded, "Encouragingly, Peter and (partner) Fran Walsh have told me they couldn't imagine `The Hobbit' without their original Gandalf."
The problem with the Hobbit project, now that the issues between Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have been resolved, is the recent lawsuit filed by the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien which is seeking to strip the rights to the material from New Line Cinema, citing "breach of contract."
If it ends up prolonging work on the two films, it could be a setback for McKellen, who is 68 at the time of this writing, which could end up being a factor in the situation.
