Talking to the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville today, President Bush accurately called what is inappropriately called the "Fairness Doctrine," - unfair.
The outrageous attempt by Democrats to attack free speech and freedom of religion is about as low as you can go and still consider yourself a real American.
When you attempt to silence dissent in America through draconian laws, it would turn America into something it isn't, nor was ever pictured to be by the founding fathers. That's why about 20 years ago it was abandoned by the FCC.
“If Congress truly supports the free and open exchange of ideas, then there is a way they can demonstrate that right now. Republicans have drafted legislation that would ban reinstatement of the so-called Fairness Doctrine. Unfortunately, Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives have blocked action on this bill. So in response, nearly every Republican in the House has signed onto what’s called a ‘discharge petition,’ that would require Congress to hold an up or down vote on the ban. Supporters of this petition are only 24 signatures away.”
President Bush has also promised he will veto any attempt to bring this 20th century device into the present. It needs to be left in the past where it belongs.
It is good to see the uncovering of a political party in America which is attempting to attack the very core of what makes America great.
To force someone in the broadcasting business and their supporters to have to listen to something they don't want to, is completely and totally off base, as anyone wanting to listen to other points of view can do it anywhere.
Lawmakers have already squashed this attempt to revive the anti-free speech and anti-freedom of religion "Fairness Doctrine," when voting 309-115 in June to keep it buried where it needs to be. We don't need to bring it out of the coffin for an autopsy, we already know why it died.
