Gary Gygax, who was a co-creator of the extraordinarily popular Dungeons & Drangons role-playing game, died on Tuesday morning at the age of 69.
In the fantasy world, Gygax is a legend, and being the "father" of fantasy role-playing, had a profound impact on its spreading across a number of media platforms, and generated the interest which eventually created the fan base for online role-playing games, as well as a number of TV shows and films.
Along with Don Kaye, Gygax founded Tactical Studies Rules, a publishing company that released the wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons game in 1974. He developed the game with Dave Arneson. Approximately 20 million people are estimated to have played the game. In the beginning Gygax said they thought about 50,000 copies would sale.
Dungeons & Dragons is considered by most, the foundation upon which all role-playing games were developed from: both board games and video games.
Stephen Chenault, CEO of Troll Lord Games, said the Troll Lord message board will provide more information about the funeral arrangements, so fans can check there.
Gygax, who has been in poor health for some time, is survived by his wife Gail, and six children, five from a previous marriage.
