Figures released by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) confirmed that 2007 did break an all-time record for box office receipts in the U.S, based on a 5.4 percent increase for the year.
The down side is even though the record was broken, admissions didn't grow at all, as the record was based upon higher ticket prices rather than increasing theater traffic. Ticket sales rose to $9.63 billion, as strong increase over the $9.14 billion enjoyed in 2006.
The seemingly endless string of blockbusters in the summer also moved the average cost of making a movie during the year to $106.6 million; an increase of 6.3 percent over 2006's average of $100.3 million. The former record was an average of $105.8 million which occurred in 2003.
Ticket prices in 2007 grew to an average cost of $6.88, up from the 2006 average price of $6.55. That's a 5 percent increase year-over-year.
Globally the industry also broke records, as overall sales reached a record $26.7 billion, up from the previous record of $25.5 billion set in 2005.
