When Brian Urlacher received the Brian Piccolo Award for the second time on Thursday, it brought up again the fond memories of Brian's Song, a movie made for TV based on the real-life friendship between Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers; two running backs for the Chicago Bears football team.
The two supported one another through injuries, but especially when Piccolo discovered he had a rare form of cancer. The movie highlights the bond between the two men when Piccolo finds out he's dying.
While the movie was a good one, what made it so powerful was the relationship between Piccolo who was white, and Sayers who was black. To see a movie based on genuine respect and care between the two was powerful at the time, and still is.
Playing the part of Brian Piccolo was a young James Caan, and an equally young Billy Dee Williams played the part of Sayers. The movie definitely worth taking a look at again.

Very much film has liked me.
